There are a number of ways to explain the gospel or “good news,” of Jesus Christ. One way is by means of four Scripture passages from the New Testament Book of Romans, which
have often been called “The Romans Road.”
These Scriptures answer the question, which Jesus was asked: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Accept what God says about us:
For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. - Romans 3:23
Everyone has sinned against God, and fails to live for God. We all fall short, or “miss the mark,” of what is right before God. We are unworthy people.
Accept the consequences of sin:
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.-Romans 6:23
Our sin has separated us from God, which is spiritual death, and will prevent us from being with God in heaven forever. Instead, we would suffer eternal death as payment for the bad
things we have done. Eternal life is God's free gift to us through the death of Jesus as a sacrifice for all people.
Accept God's love in Jesus:
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. -Romans 5:8
Thankfully, God loves us! And he has shown us his love. Jesus died on the cross in order to save us from the punishment we should receive. His death on the cross was a sacrifice that
replaces the punishment of everyone who is willing to accept his gift.
Put your trust in Jesus for eternal life:
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man
believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.-Romans 10:9,10
We all want eternal life. But it is not automatic! What we must do to accept God's free gift to us is (1) admit in our hearts that we fail and cannot make it into heaven
without his help, and (2) trust entirely in Jesus, confessing him as your risen Lord. Once we have done this, we are saved forever, we will experience his love, and we will see God's full glory.
Saying the sinner's prayer is simply a way of declaring to God that you are relying on Jesus Christ as your Savior. There are no "magical" words that result in salvation. It is only
faith in Jesus' death and resurrection that can save us. If you understand that you are a sinner and in need of salvation through Jesus Christ, here is a sinner's prayer you can pray to God: "God, I
know that I am a sinner. I know that I deserve the consequences of my sin. However, I am trusting in Jesus Christ as my Savior. I believe that His death and resurrection provided for my forgiveness.
I trust in Jesus and Jesus alone as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank you Lord, for saving me and forgiving me! Amen!"
